Yesterday, we spent the whole day waiting for the clock to strike 6 so we could head up the road to Greek Street to attend the first ever Glamour Book Club. The cobbled streets which led us up to the event were alive with people enjoying the days end and colorful shop windows had us planning lunch break trips for the forthcoming weeks. All of these were reminders of how fabulous London is as a city and with the kinder summer weather we are receiving, spirits were high as we entered The Condé Nast College of Fashion & Design to hear the experiences of being an author from best-selling novelists Adele Parks and Jess Ruston.

Upon arrival we were greeted with a glass of bubbly and a deliciously inviting spread of treats. Packed full of stylish women with impeccable summer dresses, we were thrilled to see so many other like-minded women who enjoy spending their time nuzzling into a good book and sharing their love for the written word.

As Jo Elvin, the editor of Glamour Magazine’s conversation with Jess and Adele unfolded, it was interesting to see how two women who write in similar genre’s, go about their adventure of writing a book so differently. One thing they did share however, is that they both don’t believe in writers’ block and that writing is a job and an industry just like everything else. For them, writing is what they love doing, and this passion as well as a demanding deadline means they will write whenever and wherever, and never fall victim to a blank white page. We loved this disposition here at MSL and felt more inspired to write than ever after hearing those simple but honest few lines.

What we took from this event, is that no book is written without the full emotional involvement and commitment of the author. Both Adele and Jess admitted it’s very “emotionally draining” writing a book and Adele even said she is aware that she becomes “difficult to live with”. But as with the dedication to their profession, these traits make their books even more powerful, real and engaging, and there is something so intimate about knowing both you and the author have or will experience the emotions that come with the trials and tribulations of the characters stories.

Glamour Magazine put on such an amazing event, topped off with probably the best goody bags we have ever received! Their book clubs are definitely worth keeping a look out for.

Adele’s latest novel ‘The State We’re In’ is available from today and is well worth the read. If you missed the event last night, we are hosting a Semple Secrets with Adele on the 1st of August at The Ivy, one of London’s most exclusive clubs where we would love to invite you to hear about Adele’s career and personal fashion story. Tickets are available now and can be purchased here. We hope to see you there!
