I always describe myself as not a big ‘shoe person’. You get those who love their handbags, or spend their money on expensive shoes. Many will attest that a good pair of shoes is what makes a great outfit; and while I agree to a certain extent, I also wish that shoes weren’t always compulsory. I often put an outfit together and consider footwear last – big mistake – as I look in the mirror and feel instantly deflated that my choice of footwear has invariably ruined a perfectly good ensemble. Perhaps this is just in my head or I’m being too fussy, or perhaps I simply need to up my shoe game.

As I sit and people watch I admire those women wearing a great pair of heels, Nikes or brogues with a simple outfit. Teaming a pair of colourful heels with ripped jeans and a plain white tee is so wonderfully effortless, just as a pair of metallic mules provide the perfect alternative to your standard black ballet flats. This reigns true too, as I flick through Pinterest and scroll through Instagram – footwear really is a great way to elevate an outfit, even a simple one.

Once it starts gearing towards the warmer months, our choice for footwear begins to extend further than heeled ankle boots or wellies for many of us. We no longer need to fret over the threat of chilly ankles or wet toes. Different materials and cut-out details start to make a reappearance, and once the summer really begins, the faithful flip-flop may even make a return.

So I find, that despite my own lack of sartorial dedication to footwear, spring and summer is a good time to experiment, especially if you tend to play it fairly safe throughout the colder seasons of the year. With colours, frills, prints and textures now all gracing our favourite high-street and high-end stores, footwear is no doubt a great place to start if you want to reinvent your wardrobe and update your style for the warmer months ahead.
