It’s no secret that men and women are treated differently in the dating scene – men are labelled as studs, whereas women are seen as sluts. For some reason our gender is a major factor in determining how our behaviour is perceived and it’s never more apparent that in Hollywood, where male stars are wealthy bachelors and female stars are desperate money-grabbers.51342-41296

It came to light this week that serial dater Taylor Swift is romantically involved with Tom Hiddleston, weeks after her break up with DJ Calvin Harris. Let’s get the record straight, I in no way use the above term ‘serial dater’ in a negative way as who Taylor decides to date and when she decides to date them is none of my business, it’s also none of yours. But for some reason after the press managed to sneak a few photos of the new couple the internet was ablaze with double standards and derogatory terms used to describe Taylor and her love life.Screen Shot 2016-06-17 at 09.57.36 copy

This double dating standard is incredibly damaging; teaching young girls that their love life is something that should and will be scrutinised to their detriment, whereas young boys are taught that their dating exploits are something to celebrate and that women who do the same are worth less. But where has this all come from?

Society has long seen women as the ‘pure’ sex – putting our virginity on a pedestal, one that is kicked out from under us if we lose it at the ‘wrong’ time or to the ‘wrong’ person. I can’t say it loud enough – a woman’s pureness and worth is not measured by her sex life.

“If you consider a woman less pure after you’ve touched her, maybe you should take a look at your hands.” – Kaija Sabbah

In Taylor’s case everything is magnified by how active she is online and how open she is with the press, but before you judge her here’s a list of ‘studs’ with a larger dating history than that of Taylor’s…

1. Leonardo DiCaprio

2. Ryan Gosling

3. Sean Penn

4. John Mayer

5. Justin Timberlake
