With the humble dinner jacket at its origins, the Autumn Winter 2016 offering from Daks celebrated the elegance of the English evening but certainly not as we know it. In a distinct and brave move, Creative Director Filippo Scuffi took us on a gothic descent. Eyes were smokey, hair was slick and black was the colour of choice.

Sticking to a colour palette that is so heavily dominated by one shade is the type of creative decision that can make or break a collection, as each design has the potential to become lost in a blur of repetitive creation. And it was this risk that made the latest Daks collection such a resounding triumph as through texture, detail, cut and material an all new black was born.

As predicted in a many a pre collection the prairie feel that is so reminiscent of the Victorian era is a prominent component. Necklines were high and adorned with statement black pussy bows while quaint lace collars, feathered skirts and tassel detailing helped to elevate the collection.

Accessories came in the form of a Bowie-esque statement black trilby, jewel hued brooches and embellished evening clutch bags. Beautifully offsetting the world of black in an elegant heritage nod was an all new ‘anniversary check’; in sunset hues of orange, bronze and gold, the reimagined print marked the 40th anniversary of Daks’ signature House Check.

Ultimately the Daks Autumn Winter 2016 was an elegant amalgamation of eras, styles and trends. Victorian decadence brushed shoulders with luxe textures of the 1920s and the modern clean cut tailored lines of recent times. A succinct collection which encapsulates the heritage roots of the Daks brand while ensuring an excitement and fervour for the season ahead.
