As we grow older, we start to realise the importance of skincare. Whilst we are introduced to makeup from a young age – raiding our mother’s bathroom cabinet for a luscious red lippy or attempting to perfect the cat-eye flick at 10 years old – it isn’t until much later that many of us start to realise the need for a daily skincare routine too.

Not only is it beneficial in the long run, but it can also help with everyday makeup application, dark circles and blemished skin. It can be a difficult routine to master though – especially if it’s something you’re doing in the evenings before bed. The temptation to just take off your mascara and fall into bed is enticing, but once it becomes part of your evening routine, you’ll be exfoliating, toning and moisturising in no time!

The first step to achieving this, perhaps rather obviously, is establishing your skin type. There tends to be four categories which many of us will fall into: Dry – Your face feels tight and dry with pores that aren’t noticeable to the eye. Normal – Your face is neither dry or oily, and your pores are barely noticeable. Oily – Your face has visible pores and is oily. Combination – Your face has oiliness in the t-zone but feels smooth. Using the wrong skincare for your skin can actually have the opposite effect, so it’s important to distinguish which type(s) you are before you heavily invest.

Once you’ve established you have combination skin, for example, you can start to look after it properly. Our skin sheds daily, so an easy-to-implement and effective routine is imperative. What’s more, looking after your skin now, will help to keep it looking young, fresh and beautiful for many years to come, and deter visits to the dermatologist further down the line!

While there are some ‘holy grail’ skincare products we regularly hear rave reviews for, the cult contenders that have been around for years, or the new hip products that are starting to make a name for themselves in the beauty world, it’s important to remember that what works for one, won’t necessarily have the same great results for another. With that being said though, I’ve gathered together a few of the very best that frequently grace the beauty pages and remain firmly placed in the bathroom cabinets of those in the know…
