When it comes to our wardrobes, we all have our favourite items. Those pieces that are fail-safe. That we know look good and that we can just throw on. We may have had them for years, or they may be a recent investment. It could be as simple as a plain grey t-shirt, or a beautiful tea dress that we only bring out on special occasions. No matter what, how often or how little we wear these pieces, we vow never to get rid of them.

In some ways, these pieces can create their own little capsule wardrobe. As long as you own these few items, you feel as though you will always have something to wear. Even on those mornings where you doubt this to be true, it is these that provide the backbone of your outfit. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve worn them a hundred times before either, because they can make you feel great, sexy or classy, and most importantly, they can make you feel like you.

So how do we go about sourcing these pieces? How do they find themselves rooted firmly in our wardrobes? Sometimes it’s completely by chance – you may buy a top on a whim before it becomes a sure favourite, or perhaps you’ve spent years searching high and low before you finally stumble across the one. When this happens, it’s not uncommon to buy two – in the same, or different colour – just so you always have a spare.

Like many women, a well-fitting pair of jeans is an absolute must in my wardrobe. I wear them day in, day out, so it’s vital that they fit and look great. When I found the perfect pair, I bought a few in different washes. Much like a simple pair of jeans, the humble white tee is also a must-have. Not a ground-breaking sartorial statement by any means, but sometimes all you need is a good pair of jeans and a simple tee to feel comfortable and confident – then simply team with accessories to personalise the look.

Whether you rely heavily on a pencil skirt, a khaki trench coat, a pair of stiletto heels or a crew-neck cashmere jumper, it’s important to build your own capsule wardrobe. Think about the items you reach for on a daily basis, or on those days where you’re struggling with what to wear, and stick to them. Invest in them. For it is these that make up the bread and butter of your wardrobe.
