From candy coloured hair to so-called ‘ugly’ shoes, it’s safe to say that 2015 consisted of many different strange and wacky trends. Whilst some of the looks went out with the old, others are here to stay (we’re looking at you, platformed trainers). So here it is, a list of weird, worldwide 2016 fashion trends so far.

Bubble Nails

Bubble nails are a classic example of the weird wackiness that occurs in the fashion world. Apparently this technique has been around since 2009, however it has only recently gained popularity. Floods of photos have gone viral on Instagram under the hashtag #bubblenails. The technique is perfected by the nail technician placing a ball of acrylic at the center of the nail and building it out by adding layers, finishing it off with the customer’s choice of paint.

Silver Fox Hair

The silver fox look was extremely popular in 2014, and now it’s making a comeback. Except this time you can actually buy silver hairspray at your local supermarket to give your hair that aged look we are all seemingly craving. Crazy, right?

Hangover Makeup

Perhaps kick started by Snapchat’s big eyed, rosy-cheeked filter, Japan and Korea are now embracing the hangover look with open arms. That pink, tired and puffy look is usually something we aim to cover up after a night out at the bar, but glassy eyes and blush under the eyes is apparently the new beauty trend. This look is fulfilled through eye drops to create a watery look to the eyes, highlighter on the majority of the face to create a dewy look, blusher under the eyes and smudged eye makeup to exemplify the sleepy image.

Pixelated Hair

Ombre effects and natural highlights seem to be a thing of the past now that digitally inspired pixelated hair has made an entrance into the fashion world. This innovative colouring process achieves a “new chromatic dimension and colour, while playing with movement and transforming the textures into the appearance of the pixel effect” according to Xpresion. How is it achieved? The hair dresser applies dye in square blocks through large/small sections of hair, resulting in the pixelated, contrasting style.

Choker Dresses

Just when we thought choker necklaces were so last year, popular clothing stores such as Missguided have incorporated choker designs into their dresses and tops, so that a thin piece of fabric lines the neck. Combining both chic and sexy, this trend isn’t so crazy but it certainly is different, and I can’t wait to purchase my own.

Rick Owen’s Human Backpacks

In contrast to the crazy fashion trends mentioned, here’s a brand new catwalk trend for Spring 2016 that will blow your mind. During his Spring 2016 Fashion Show, Rick Owens nailed wacky with the display of models carrying their colleagues upside down in body harnesses down the catwalk. Playing on the ideal of nourishment, sisterhood and motherhood, casting director Angus Munro certainly did a good job in portraying the strength of a woman. Can I say that human backpacks will take off in 2016? I’m not so sure.
