fashion basics

It is around this time of year that the fashion world begins to pine longingly for the spring months and the ultimate fashion basics (I however, tend to start much earlier than this – by December I’m already looking forward to wearing pretty floral dresses, without tights, again).

Of course, the English weather can have other ideas. As I type this, there is a blustery snow storm outside, with promises of more snowfall later this week. It seems that spring has been put on hiatus for the foreseeable future. While the shops are filled with embroidered blouses, flowy skirts and midi dresses, we are confined to thick woolly coats, waterproof boots and warm winter gloves. We continue to be sent email after newsletter, excitedly revealing new-in spring wear trends and bikinis for our holidays. And yet, we can’t actually wear any of it because the temperatures are struggling to reach above freezing.

However, with the clock change imminent and the promise that spring is on its way, it’s a good time to start creating those Pinterest boards and decluttering your wardrobe in preparation. To start thinking about what you might be missing in your spring wardrobe or to see which of the trends are catching your eye before you start compiling those all-important store wish-lists.

Everyone’s style is different, and what catches one eye will certainly not catch another’s. As a rule of thumb though – whether you’re more of a smart or casual dresser – your spring wardrobe will always benefit from the basics. Those pieces that you can pair with anything, team with an item more trend-led and always fall back on should you have one of those days where you exclaim, ‘I have nothing to wear!’

The white tee

A classic, timeless piece that is essential through all seasons. Opt for one with an embroidered slogan or for a slightly more slouchy fit to wear with an oversized cardi.
