The signs have been there for a while so we probably should have seen it coming. It started years ago with thick rimmed glasses balancing ironically on the nose of too-cool-for-school fashion darlings, then came the influx of marvel comic remakes. It was the quiet revolution that we didn’t even see coming, but suddenly geeks are everywhere and even the coolest kids want a piece of the action.

The runaway success of American sitcom “The Big Bang Theory” probably goes some way to explaining our fascination with all things geeky. Creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady have struck a chord with the geek that shies away inside all of us, one minute we are laughing at Leonard’s awkward attempts to woo Penny and then out of nowhere Sheldon becomes a style icon? Comic books heroes are Sheldon’s t-shirt of choice and it seems that the fashion world has fallen in love with the characters too as comic book prints have filtered on to the catwalks. Phillip Lim pioneered the comic revolution with his “Ka-Pow” jumper that bred a million copycat high street looks. The designer was so inspired by comics that he even released his own limited edition graphic novel “Kill the Night” to celebrate the launch of his AW12 collection.

The bright, bold colours of this look are perfect for the 90’s revival that is going to be everywhere come Spring/Summer. Topshop have even devoted a collection to the trend – “Comic Girl” features comic book prints on everything from joggers and t-shirts  to leggings. But this look isn’t just for dressing down, make like a superhero at work with a comic print pencil skirt, it might not make you type at the speed of light but it will make your co-workers smile; which on a Monday morning in February is no small feat!

Whether you take your style tips from Sheldon, Phillip Lim or even Wonder Woman herself, let your inner geek run free this season, who needs a hero when your accessories have their own super powers?
