Queen Elizabeth II isn’t the only one celebrating their 90th birthday this week as the beloved children’s character Winnie the Pooh is also celebrating nine decades and the pair are celebrating their joint anniversary by meeting on the pages of the new Winnie the Pooh and the Royal Birthday illustrated story.
The story sees Winnie the Pooh take a tour of London before making a stop at Buckingham Palace to deliver the Queen a birthday message. The story features all of our beloved Winnie the Pooh favourites and even a cameo appearance from Prince George himself bumping into Piglet!
Making his debut in 1926 A.A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh has been an incredibly popular figure in British culture ever since, so it seems only fitting that the two should finally meet under such prestigious circumstances. Not only that, but the Queen is also said to have been a fan of A.A. Milne’s storytelling as a child.
Topping the charts on the 2014 Favourite Children’s Book poll it’s clear to see that the old bear still has some life in him yet, being consistently revived in modern versions of the traditional tale. Beautifully written by Jane Riordan, the special edition is a fantastic ode to our Queen on her 90th birthday. Riordan recalls some initial doubt in her ability to write an authentic Winnie the Pooh tale describing the experience as “daunting but a huge honour”. But it’s safe to say that she has more than done justice to A.A. Milne, Winnie the Pooh and all of his friends.
