It’s not often that fashion takes us by surprise, we’re pretty used to the ever-changing and recycling of trends but the ingenious styling of The 100 could be the end of the world as we know it. The 100 is a post-apocalyptic drama – think a Game of Thrones/The Hunger Games mash up…it’s a dream come true. But one of the most successful aspects of the show (and believe me, there are many) are the character costumes. Set 97 years after the end of the world it would be easy for the designers to have taken a futuristic approach to the styling of the show, but instead our main characters look as if they could have stepped right off the streets they were walking on and straight into this other world. Clothes that have been worn, handed down, stitched and well-worn again; I’ve tried distressing clothes before and it’s a lot harder than it looks, to give the clothes a genuine worn away feel and look you need to know what you’re doing, otherwise you start to look as if Freddy Krueger’s had a go at you!

The person behind the amazing styling team on the show is Katia Stano, who is known for her work on She’s the Man and Jennifer’s Body is no novice when it comes to teen fashion – which is lucky as the majority of the cast, and the main focus of The 100 are under 18’s. Stano’s Twitter has been blowing up with fans asking about costume details and she’s been more than happy to help. Having your work appreciated in such a way must be an unbelievable feeling, and you can tell they can’t quite believe the extremely positive response it’s received. One of the most asked about items are the bomber jackets that the cast are wearing, they look vintage and second hand, but they’re only from H&M! With the cuffs and collars frayed, stitching pulled and re-worked. Some of them have even been turned inside out to expose the quilted, orange padding, whereas the majority have the navy jackets. It’s a small detail that the fandom have picked up on, but it’s the details such as that one – which distinguish the ‘insiders’ and ‘outsiders’ of the group – that are appreciated by hardcore fans.

Throughout the series the character’s outfits go through a transition, some more than others, but we see the airplane like belt buckles of the dropship used as buckles on clothing. Tyres and scrap metal are used as armour, animal skin is used as thermal wear and odd bits of material are used as weapon holsters – everything about the styling feels so genuine, it looks handmade, humble and real. It’s not uncommon for film and television costume designers to go over-the-top with the wardrobe department, leaving you to wonder how the characters even got their hands on it.

It seems the costume department on The 100 are on a role, and with the increasingly gritty storyline I can’t wait to see how the character’s looks develop and change with season 3. So if you’re looking for a new show to binge watch, look no further than The 100! The only question remains…would you survive?
