This week saw Made in Chelsea back on our screens with more drama and ‘dah-lings’ than you can shake a stick at. Despite its annoyingly addictive nature, it would seem that in the world of fashion, the MIC crew are top of the class. Just one look over the AW13 runways and you’ll see tweeds, checks and cable knits with everyone from Tommy Hilfiger to Miu Miu jumping on board.
Grazia even picked up on this unexpected style comeback this week stating that in 1982 (When Diana was not only Princess of Wales, but also of ‘Sloane-y’ style) Harpers and Queen produced the officially ‘Sloane Ranger handbook’ claiming that navy is a major part of the look. Is it a coincidence that navy is huge this season too – I don’t think so!
With the Duchess of Cambridge being this years ultimate style icon, MIC getting more air time than it possibly should be and even a handful of celebs favouring a Wellington and a Barbour jacket, it really is no surprise that this trend is back with a bang. I just can’t believe Spencer Matthews has landed himself as an inspiration to the runway! (Sigh!) But, as the saying goes, when in Rome – or Chelsea, do as they Romans do. So I’m here with some top tips on how to work the trend without overdoing it. The great thing is, most of the separates that make up the look are basic wardrobe staples and can be re-used in a multitude of ways.
The Chelsea look can be quite easily mastered, you just have be sure to pick your pieces cautiously. Throwing a jumper over your skirt and shirt combo, matching a tweed blazer with skinny jeans and loafers, or an oversized Prince of Wales check jacket are great ways to buy into the trend without looking like you’ve just mugged the whole of the Kings Road.
This Uniqlo cashmere sweater is a great start and comes in array of trans-seasonal colours. Team it H&M’s black peplum skirt and a pair of these Topshop brogues for a cool update on the look.
Warehouse have some really great Sloane style coats, their POW check one in particular is a great buy and great value at just £95. I love Aldo’s burgundy patent Tatiana loafers right now, which too can be worked into almost any outfit. Start with these basics and you’re already half way to being the newest member of the show – Oh just don’t forget your yah, darling!
