As ever loyal foot soldiers to fashion our excitement is at fever pitch for the upcoming season. While we’re far from wishing away the long summer evenings and the freedom of bared bronzed skin, we simply cannot deny our craving for warm chunky knits and cosy coverups. And what better way to indulge our wandering sartorial minds than by lusting over the AW catwalks – with one trend in particular really making us stand to attention.
The military trend is nothing new and as with many a recurring theme it evolves and reemerges each season complete with a fresh new slant. Whether it be the luxe introduction of leather at Lanvin, or Balenciaga’s inventive pop of colour, the utilitarian look of AW14 is back on the frontline and stronger than ever.

A predominant khaki colour palette of seasons past has been reworked to include a rainbow of autumnal hues including soft greys, frosty mochas, and rich golden tones. Textures have also been revisited with tweeds, suedes and leather all adding to the military precision of the trend.

Nowhere was the military vibe more evident than through the eyes of Olivier Rousteing and the Balmain collection. Championed by his loyal army of celebrities soldiers including the likes of Kendall Jenner, Kim Kardashian and Rihanna the collection offers a fresh and futuristic take on the traditional military look. Heavy use of thick pleated leather, beautifully contradicted the relaxed fitting cut of olive green combats and the surprising addition of vibrant leopard print. The cohesive, clean cut collection was everything you could ask for and more, showing that you really can teach an old trend new tricks and we will certainly be first to fall in line!
