It’s officially autumn.  In my view, this is the best time of year for clothes shopping.  But there are so many tempting new trends to explore that it’s difficult to know where to start in terms of updating your look. One of the best, and easiest, ways to give your wardrobe an instant lift is to invest in new accessories, particularly shoes.

Women have a relationship with shoes that, frankly, men don’t quite understand. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, women’s shoes tend to be beautiful, with the ability to transform the everyday into something spectacular. Secondly, they are the one article of clothing that remains constant – no one has to diet to fit into their shoes! And lastly, high heels have the ability to make every woman look taller and slimmer.

However, not everyone is comfortable in heels. I have a theory that every woman has their own personal ‘optimum’ heel height, whether that’s flat, four inches or somewhere in between. It’s about discovering what works for you. To find yours, test various heel heights, taking into consideration your height, whether you feel balanced and most importantly, whether you can walk in them. Balance is particularly important, not just in terms of stability. I often see petite women, for example, wearing towering stilettos, which look completely out of proportion to their small frames.

Now that there are so many stylish flat options (take a look at Hannah Rochell’s fabulous blog En Brogue for inspiration) there is more choice out there than ever before. There are also lots of mid-height block heels (particularly boots) out there, giving you height with comfort – what’s not to love?

So when you shop for shoes, think about the following: Choose quality over quantity; the legendary Marlene Dietrich advised buying one pair of good shoes instead of three pairs of poor quality. Do not be seduced by a sensational pair of shoes in the mid-season sales that you know you will never wear, or that are cripplingly uncomfortable. And lastly always consider your optimum heel height!

Happy shoe shopping!
