Annie Lennox is one of the most respected and inspirational female icons of our time. She has achieved great success over the last thirty years through her musical career with The Tourists, The Eurythmics and as a solo artist. Her powerful, dynamic and enigmatic style has had a major impact on fashion and pop culture throughout the years, so much so that it is with no wonder The Victoria and Albert Museum have unveiled a new art exhibition celebrating the life and creativity of Annie Lennox.
The House of Annie Lennox exhibition features more than fifty artefacts from Annie’s personal archive, including costumes, portraits, and original lyric sheets from some of her most successful records. The six month exhibition is designed around the notion of a ‘house’, which is the creative ‘heart’ of the exhibition, providing a visual journey through Annie’s illustrious career and inspirations that made an impression on her life as an artist.
The outfits on display are an assortment of styles, designs, fabrics and structure, and are highly representative of the unique approach Annie expresses through costume and performance to explore ideas of reality, illusion and gender identity.
One of the costumes on exhibition is the Union Jack tuxedo that Annie wore at the 1999 BRIT awards, an example of the quirkiness she expresses through her style, as well as a gold lame corset and fingerless gloves ensemble.
There are also various pieces of artwork on display that has been influenced by the Scottish-born singer. A portrait of Annie by Adam Whitehead is definitely one of the most decadent pieces throughout the whole exhibition. The portrait was designed by Alice Temperley in support of women in Africa for Oxfam, and is beautifully embellished and hand embroidered.
Annie has consistently drawn on her international profile to raise awareness for a number of charities, and has been honoured for her remarkable humanitarian work over the years by British Red Cross.
The House of Annie Lennox exhibition runs from 15th September 2011 until 26th February 2012.
