Autumn footwear

When it comes to the colder months, it seems we take more sartorial decisions into consideration for fear of being too cold or rained upon. Not only must we consider what coat or jacket we are going to take as we peruse the weather forecast, or whether or not to take a warm wool scarf, but what to wear on our feet often takes precedence too.

If the heavens have opened, we want to avoid suede and open toes. Should the temperatures drop, we want to ensure our ankles are covered accordingly. You may wish to wear heels but don’t want to risk slipping on the wet pavements. Wellies, as practical as they are, are unfortunately not your usual workwear attire. Trainers then, having grown tremendously in popularity over the last few years, have been working their way into our daily wardrobes and offer a convenient alternative on those less-forgiving weather days. If nothing else, they’re the perfect substitute for popping on while you walk to work, before changing into something a little smarter when you arrive.

During the summer months, the options for what to put on our feet are seemingly infinite, from pumps to sandals, flip flops to mules. Come the more autumnal months however, we find ourselves in more of a footwear conundrum.

It’s fair to say that waterproof footwear – whether boots or trainers – are a must-have. So too is a closed toe – convenient for both the rain, wind and the cold.

We must reflect on our colour palette at this time of year too. We tend to wear more neutral hues, with many of us favouring the ever-faithful black and browns, with a subtle hint of burgundy. So, with the weather, autumnal hues and comfort in mind, not to mention the current trend for animal print, it’s important to have a few options for those ‘I don’t know what the weather is doing’ days this season:
