Following one of the biggest campaigns in recent times comes a new wave of war against the unfair inequality between the sexes. And even though the ‘tampon tax’ debate has still not been resolved, light has now been shed on the sexist pricing of everyday products which has resulted in more fuel being added to the sexist fire than ever before. The age old tale of man vs woman is starting to get a little jaded now – humanity has advanced and achieved so much and yet we are still pitted against each other. But why?
Have you ever wondered why the content of your shopping basket is a little more expensive than your male counterparts? Over the past couple of years it has come to light after a series of investigations in high street stores that women are being charged more for the exact same, or the equivalent products to men. I always thought it was a little odd that so often I’ve encountered men who are appalled when I reveal the total cost of my toiletries and my clothes – to be honest I always thought that the cost imbalance was because women would choose to buy the higher end products and men would settle for the more ‘basic’ brands, but sadly that is not the case and it seems they’ve had us fooled for years.
Some have claimed if women really cared that much they could just as easily buy the products targeted at men and I understand this logic to some extent; for example socks are socks, but on the other hand deodorant is not just deodorant, and I honestly do not want to smell like ‘Quantum’, and neither should I have to! Having to pay more for the same products is one thing but add to this the number of products that are necessary for women alone, such as sanitary products that are also taxed, and you’ve racked up a mighty bill.
The extent of this ‘pink tax’ even goes as far as affecting children, with Argos among those found to be discriminating against females by charging more for a pink scooter in comparison to the exact same blue one. For many the price difference on the odd item here and there doesn’t seem worthy of such news or attention, but imagine if the roles were reversed, would these prices ever have made it past approval?
