Coachella

Yesterday was the final day of another hugely successful – and incredibly well-attended – Coachella. It is really only in the last five years or so that this highly infectious and Instagram-worthy festival has come to fruition, and now it seems that anyone who is anyone is travelling to the dusty desert plains to dance the night away under the golden Californian sun.

Coachella is, undoubtedly, now one of the largest and most famous music festivals in the world. In fact, it’s also one of the most profitable too – from 2013 to 2015 it set new records for festival attendance and gross revenues, and last year it sold a staggering 198,000 tickets with an estimated $94.2 million in revenue.

Located 125 miles from L.A., within the Colorado Desert, its origins trace back to a 1993 concert that Pearl Jam performed at the Empire Polo Club, leading to the inaugural Coachella Festival in October 1999. From a one day event to a two-day festival, Coachella was expanded to a third day in 2007 and before long, a second weekend in 2012. Five years later, and festival-goers can now celebrate across three-day consecutive weekends in April.

Over the years, true music royalty has graced the many stages of this A-list festival, from AC/DC to Jack White and Florence & the Machine, to Coldplay and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. While in the early days, the music played live from this sweltering location was much edgier, the set of Calvin Harris in 2014 drew the second biggest crowd the grounds had reportedly ever seen. Now, with this year’s acts performing on the main stage including Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, Radiohead and Lorde, the music variety really provides something for everyone.

Much like Glastonbury here in the UK, tickets for 2017’s festival sold out within a few hours of going on sale – a sure testament to its ever increasing popularity and world-renowned reputation.

With whispers already in the air that Beyoncé is set to headline next year, it seems that Coachella will no doubt continue to reign high as the music festival to attend in 2018. Who knows, perhaps it might just be my lucky year…!
