“When a little black dress is right, there is nothing else to wear in its place.”

When you think Audrey Hepburn one dress instantly comes to mind; the little black dress.

Fifty years ago Audrey Hepburn charmed audiences as Holly Golightly in the 1961 romantic comedy Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The second Hepburn appeared on screen the fashion world was forever changed. The opening scene from the movie sees Holly standing outside Tiffany’s eating a croissant wearing a little black dress as she gazes through the shop window. At that exact cinematic moment that simple black dress she wore was set for stardom. It would be recreated time and time again and would reign victorious for decades to come.

The little black dress was no new trend in the 60s, Fashion historians ascribe the origins of the little black dress to the 1920s designs of Coco Chanel intended to be long-lasting, versatile, affordable, accessible to the widest market possible and neutral in colour. But its was the black Italian satin sheath dress designed by French couturier Hubert de Givenchy, that won the hearts of fashion lovers and earned the dress its status as a wardrobe staple.

The floor length gown with fitted bodice, embellished at the back with distinctive cut-out décolleté has become a cult classic. The dress, complete with a string of pearls and dark oversized sunglasses, is a statement of elegant sophistication for women everywhere.

Chic and versatile, perfect for any occasion that’s what the sheath dress has come to stand for. The LBD is a timeless classic as relevant today was it ever was.

Now cited as one of the dresses that changed the world Givenchy’s black Italian stain sheath dress is perhaps the most famous Little Black Dress of all time.

The dress set a record in 2006 when one of the three originals was auctioned for £410,000 – six times its original estimate. That’s one very lucky, stylish, bidder. I wonder if they know the stories about the incredible garment they now own…
