The blazer has always been considered a rather androgynous wardrobe staple for women. Becoming popular during the power-dressing era of the 1980s, it’s had a bit of a makeover since those days. From donning large shoulder pads and oversized lapels, to a collarless, more cropped style during the ‘90s, to the oversized and longer-lengths we now see more commonly today.

Its makeover has also meant it’s become more wearable too. No longer just an office staple that sits solitary in the ‘workwear’ section of your wardrobe, it has become an everyday staple too. To be worn at weekends and for date night, for lunch with the girls and holidays spent sightseeing.  It has all but lost its association to those formal, uncomfortable and ill-fitting days we remember so well at school; and in its place stands an array of wearable, comfortable and figure-flattering options in every colour – and texture – of the rainbow.

During the autumn months last year, the velvet blazer was seen plastered across our favourite high-street stores and Instagram accounts in autumnal hues – perfect for Christmas parties and festive soirees. Now, it’s returned once more and is set to be another big trend for the spring and summer months ahead.

In some ways, although we moan continuously to the fact, we are rather lucky with the weather here in the UK during those warmer months. Whilst we have the odd day of gloriously hot sunshine, it is on those other days where bringing along a jacket or blazer is still a good idea.

From summer Breton stripes to neutral hues and bolder brights, a more boxy fit, or something a little longer-lined, the high-street is well and truly spoiling us this year when it comes to this versatile staple.
