It seems hard to believe that a whole year has passed since the twerking foam finger of 2013 but on Sunday 24th the music industry’s finest gathered in Inglewood California for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. And the class of 2014 certainly didn’t disappoint with some incredible sartorial hits, misses and glitches, as well as some truly show stopping performances.
Of course no awards roundup is complete without obligatory red carpet scrutiny and there were certainly some sights to behold. Designer of the moment Balmain was seen on the backs of many A-listers but it was the 2015 resort collection dress worn by Kim Kardashian that really wowed the crowds. The intricately beaded mini, complete with a very revealing neckline, complimented Kim’s curvaceous frame perfectly. The Kardashian concluded the look with loose tousled curls, nude nails and neutral makeup.
Jennifer Lopez and Kelly Rowland also topped the style stakes in equally amazing gowns. Showing that age really is just a number, J.Lo flaunted her enviable figure in a sparkling Charbel Zoe creation. Finishing the look with sleek straight locks and smokey eyes, Lopez was top to toe perfection. Mum to be Kelly Rowland also took to the carpet proudly showing off her growing baby bump. The singer looked fresh faced and beaming in a floor length sequin gown with beautifully braided hair giving the look a relaxed grecian feel.
Sadly not all of the stars brought their sartorial A game on the night and none more so than Katy Perry and rapper Riff Raff. Taking double denim to a whole new level, the pair appeared to be channeling Justin and Britney circa 2001 in their bizarre denim studded ensembles. Also bottom of the fashion pecking order, but through no fault of her own, was poor Nicki Minaj who appeared to suffer a severe wardrobe malfunction during her performance with Jessie J and Ariana Grande. Ever the professional Minaj managed to clutch onto her dress for dear life while performing the trio’s new single Bang Bang.
Certainly saving the best until last the honour of closing the show was given to none other than Queen Bey herself. The star stormed through a 15 minute medley of her latest album before being presented with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award for lifetime achievement by baby daughter Blue Ivy and husband Jay Z who described her as “the greatest living entertainer”.
