Over the past couple of weeks the internet has been awash with campaigns, tweets and articles urging Disney to give Elsa a girlfriend in Frozen 2. The campaign comes from the growing frustration of a lack of diversity from the production company – instead giving us countless white, heterosexual relationships.
Putting this type of pressure on a powerhouse such as Disney is crucial in opening up discussions and acceptance, especially amongst young people. These are the future generations, if we positively portray how diverse and beautiful the world and it’s people can be, we can also break down the social stereotypes and barriers that hold us back – we can help give them the foundations on which to build real human relationships and understanding.
The past years have seen a massive leap in equality between the sexes – with more and more strong, independent women making their way onto our screens we are seeing an incredibly positive response from young girls who are becoming more confident because of it. Ronda Rousey, Beyoncé, Emma Watson, Malala Yousafzai, Ruby Rose, Katniss Everdeen and even Frozen’s very own Elsa are amongst the growing list of most powerful females that are motivating and inspiring people across the world.

Amazing as it is that we are finally being given greater female representation, sexuality is another important part of our society which is wildly unexplored in popular media; surprising since we have made some incredibly important steps towards equality for the LGBTQ+ community, with gay marriage being declared legal in 15 countries around the globe. Also we have had Caitlyn Jenner thrusting the transgender community into the limelight and shows such as The 100 and Orange is the New Black representing a wide range of relationships and sexualities. However, I can’t help but feel that if these relationships were presented to us earlier it wouldn’t be as big of a deal as it seems to some today – this is why it’s so important for Disney to take the leap.
I wouldn’t mind, but Disney have made some rather questionable storylines in the past, so I can hardly believe that making one of their characters gay would be totally out of the question…cast your mind back to The Bee Movie, in which a wife left her husband for a bee. Or Pinocchio, who’s friends are turned into donkeys to work as slaves in salt mines. Or better yet Peter Pan who can fly, he also never grows up and is best friends with a fairy, of course!
Now don’t get me wrong I am an avid Disney fan, constantly revelling in their fairytales and fables but their power and presence is also not lost on me – they have the whole world watching and waiting. So please Disney, Give Elsa a girlfriend and give us the diversity our children and ourselves desperately need to see!
