Fashion is a serious business; from towering heels to nipped-in waists, you would be forgiven for thinking that the fashion world takes itself too seriously. But this season it’s determined to show you that it does in fact have a fun side. From comic book geeks to cartoon prints, get ready to embrace everything tongue-in-chic.
Last year we told you how Marvel comics continued takeover of the big screen and small screen geek heroes like The Big Bang Theory crew were influencing fashion in new and unexpected ways. If you thought that was just a flash in the pan then it’s time to check your equations because geek chic is still going strong. This season the high street is full of tweeds, blazers and androgynous trousers and if you don’t have a pair of thick rimmed glasses balanced on your nose and elbow patches on your sleeves then don’t even bother showing up for work!
Philip Lim led the charge with his comic book themed accessories and knitwear last year and continues to embrace his humorous side this season with his accessories emblazoned with slogans like “OMG” and “Gorge”. Slogans designed to raise a smile are not just confined to the catwalks; the high street is always a good place to look on the lighter side of fashion and if you have previously been missing the slogan tees of the nineties then you will be pleased to find yourself spoilt for choice.

Designer brand Moschino have embraced fun fashion with a collection that’s cute, pink and 100% inspired by Barbie! They are also the brand that brought us the SpongeBob Squarepants print jumper dress and the MacDonald’s inspired collection. In fact, Moschino’s whole accessories collection is tongue-in-chic at its very best.

Online brand Lazy Oaf (available at ASOS) have taken fun fashion to the next level with a capsule collection of tops, dresses and accessories that are bold, graphic and look like they have taken their inspiration directly from hit nineties teen show Saved by the Bell. Even if nineties throwbacks are not your preferred look you can still get in on the action with cartoon print jumpers and t-shirts inspired by cartoon Disney characters.

In fact with so much choice there is no excuse for taking fashion too seriously this season. As the nights draw in and the temperature drops, we could all do with a wardrobe that will raise a smile.
