Now we are well aware that summer has arrived, but being educated in the unpredictable nature of British weather we know that our wardrobes must be prepared for any eventuality! And this season the high street has the answer to our weather woes – the duster coat, your perfect partner for those chilly summer nights that will see you right through to autumn.
Historically described as a light loose fitting long coat (just think of your typical trench minus the bells and whistles), the duster coat was originally worn by horsemen to protect their clothing from trail dust. At the turn of the twentieth century, duster coats were worn by both men and women to protect their clothes when riding in open top cars on the unpaved roads of the time. Nowadays, while such practical reasoning has become redundant, the duster coat has been reborn as a chic, lightweight alternative to more traditional summer coverups.
Moving away from traditional creams and browns, today’s dusters are available in an array of colours including pretty pastel shades and practical autumnal hues. Always ahead of the game, Victoria Beckham was spotted in a chic sleeveless duster while roaming the Parisian streets in September of last year. More recently emerging style guru Kylie Jenner, The Row founder Ashley Olsen and many a trend setting fashion blogger have also embraced the duster movement.

For me the beauty of the duster is its length, which creates a fantastic contrast when teamed with denim shorts or skirts and also offers welcome relief to those who prefer to ease themselves gently into summer attire. Duster coats are also very versatile, as the tailored cut ensures it is smart enough for a day at the office, while the playful colours make it a great evening and weekend staple – just add a fedora and a pair of sunnies and your good to go!
So snap up your very own duster coat this season to guarantee that you (ahem) clean up in the style stakes this summer.
