Since it’s release in 2006 The Devil Wears Prada starring Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci has become a beloved cult classic with fashion and film fans alike. Based on the best-selling 2003 novel of the same name, it portrays the hilarious yet cut-throat experiences that Andrea endures whilst working under notoriously mean fashion magazine editor, Miranda Priestly.
The original novel by Lauren Weisberger, was inspired by her own real-life experiences as an assistant to US Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour; this in itself plays a huge part in the book and the film’s success.
Wintour’s legendary demeanour has earned her the respect and envy of many in the fashion world – but, being Editor in Chief for almost 30 years is a hard task for even the strongest willed. Both Lauren’s novel and the film adaptation let slip that Wintour, and indeed her character, is indeed human after all.
The Devil Wears Prada, to the joy of it’s fans, is set to hit the stage with a little help from musical genius Sir Elton John, who in the past has penned incredible pieces for The Lion King, Aida and Billy Elliot.
John, whose works spans both music and fashion is a fantastic fit for the musical. Excited for the project he’s said: “I can’t wait to sink my musical teeth into this hunk of popular culture.”
Cast announcements and even production dates have yet to be announced but that hasn’t hindered the excitement in the Semple office. We’ll keep you updated!
