They say the couple that plays together stays together and it seems duo dressing with your partner has got the nod of approval. The important man in your life is a huge part of who you are, so why not make them a huge part of your wardrobe? This isn’t to say it’s okay to match every item you have with each other, but to create a palette of either colours, cuts or textures that showcase your combined sartorial eye. Let me introduce you to the Styples, a new breed of couples that dress in unistyle.

Olivia Palermo and her newly announced fiancé Johannes Huebl, and the new K’s on the block, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are just a couple of Styples you will want to know. Studying their outfits, you can see that they have each distinguished an individual style, picking a colour that suits them best or a cut that accentuates their silhouette most, while establishing a combined style that associates them with one another. Its subtlety is something I personally adore. It shows the couple know each other well enough to understand the others fashion manner yet are confident enough in their appearance to assert their own identity and personal taste. As a couple spend more time together, their interests, thoughts, goals and tastes merge, and voilà, two become one in the form of a Styple.

It’s important to note however that this trend is not just a fashion fad. It has been proven to have some gumption behind it. ‘A marriage is more likely to be successful if the individuals share the same values, background, educational level, social status and life-goals’ explains David Popenoe, Doctor of Psychology of Marriage. Duo dressing is a way of equalizing one another, finding common ground and balancing the relationship.

Spanish-based photographer Nacho Rojo also caught onto this and created a what he called the Couples series. His work translated as an interesting way to look at the theory that couples tend to emulate one another unknowingly over time. The lesson here? Never underestimate the power of dress.
